Over two hundred members of the public took advantage of Mexborough and Swinton Astronomical Society's "A Night Under the Stars" at Thrybergh Country Park (sponsored by the Institute of Physics). The public enjoyed a clear night to view the Moon's surface up close, looking at mountains, craters and mares (seas) including the Sea of Tranquillity location of man

Mexborough Swinton Astronomical Society, a local educational charity, today unveiled plans to extend its Community Access Programme and open its observatory at Hoober to the public during the summer months. The summer programme will offer visitors the chance to observe our nearest star - the Sun. Society Chairman, Les Marsden, explained, “we tend to regard the Sun as rather special – and for life here on Earth it is – but in reality it isa very average type of star. By studying the Sun astronomers hope to learn more about the lives of stars further a field.”
