Mexborough & Swinton Astronomical Society, a local educational charity, was celebrating yet again after coming runner-up in a national competition which recognizes best practice in the online publication of charities’ annual reports and accounts. The results were announced at the Institute of Chartered Accountants for England and Wales (ICAEW) annual Charity Awards evening.
Mexborough & Swinton Astronomical Society’s Annual Report and Statement of Accounts to March 31st 2011 was selected as runner-up in the category of Charities with an Income Below £250K. The Society carried off a certificate and prize money of £1,000 but more importantly, took away valuable feedback and recognition.
The Society is no stranger to success in the Charities Online Financial Reporting Awards having taken 1st place in 2009, and joint 1st in 2010. The Society has now enjoyed a spot in the finalist shortlist for 5 consecutive years. Society Chairman Les Marsden said: “To be in the final shortlist nation-wide for the fifth year in succession is fantastic; we are really proud of our achievement.”
The Annual ICAEW Charities Online Financial Reporting and Accounts Awards (COFRA) are open to charities registered in the UK which prepare their accounts in line with the charities' SORP or other Charity Commission guidance for small charities. The Awards aim to:
- increase transparency by rewarding best practice in financial reporting
- raise the standard of web-based financial reporting for greater impact and accessibility
- encourage more charities to do their financial reporting online
To make the finalist shortlist a charity must excel in all these areas and the Society was praised for its “achievement in producing the highest standards of online financial reports.”
