Stargazing Live 2012
The second series of BBC Stargazing Live will be broadcast over three days between January 16-18 2012 and will be presented by Professor Brian Cox.The programmes aim to stimulate public interest in astronomy and organisations across the country will be partnering with the BBC to offer viewers the chance to get involved with some hands on astronomical activities.
Mexborough & Swinton Astronomical Society is actively supporting StarGazing Live in 2012, we have a range of events planned for January 2012.
Charity Accounts 2011 - Runner Up
The society is celebrating after coming runner-up in a national competition which recognizes best practice in the online publication of charities' annual reports and accounts. The results were announced at the Institute of Chartered Accountants for England and Wales (ICAEW) annual Charity Awards evening.
Visitors Flock to BBC Stargazing Event
Mexborough & Swinton Astronomical Society in association with the RSPB Old Moor staged a hugely successful "Starlings and Starlight" event on January 8th 2011 as part of BBC Stargazing Live.
Over 100 visitors braved the cold weather and flocked to the RSPB's Dearne Valley reserve to be rewarded with sights of the starlings coming into roost before spending the evening observing the Moon and Jupiter; as a special treat visitors also had the chance to see the International Space Station (ISS) passing overhead.
Peter's Success is out of this world
Peter Jalowiczor, 45, a valued member of the society, has been officially named by the University of California's Lick-Carnegie Planet Search Team as the co-discoverer of planets HD31253b, HD218566b, HD177830c and HD99492c.
Using two home computers, he spent many a late night analysing thousands of astronomical measurements released by the Santa Cruz-based university in 2005, after hundreds of hours of his spare time from March 2007 onwards, Peter analysed data, working the figures and creating graphs.
