A Night Under the Stars at Thrybergh Country Park
Over two hundred members of the public took advantage of Mexborough and Swinton Astronomical Society's "A Night Under the Stars" at Thrybergh Country Park (sponsored by the Institute of Physics). The public enjoyed a clear night to view the Moon's surface up close, looking at mountains, craters and mares (seas) including the Sea of Tranquillity location of man's first landing. Spectacular images of Jupiter with banding and four of it's moons were seen. ).
The Andromeda, Bode and Ring Galaxies were all clearly seen and to top the night off the International Space Station put in an appearance sweeping across the southern sky.
Mexborough and Swinton Astronomical Society provided telescopes, displays and beginners guides during the evening the Summer Prize raffle was won by Dave Smith of Main Street, Wentworth carrying off a telescope donated by Stockport Binoculars and Telescopes based at Century Park, Manvers.
